The 20,222 SF renovation of the existing PICU units on the 8th and 9th Floors of the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital was extensive with spaces comprised of 7,050 SF of full renovation, 590 SF of new expansion, and 12,582 SF of aesthetic upgrades. The new expansion obtained additional square footage by pushing out the existing storefront at the public corridor to make additional space for a new waiting area. The new units are now specifically designated for highly specialized pediatric cardiac care and can flex with the recently renovated and medical/surgical-based 6th-floor PICU, which was also previously designed by MILES.

A new open-concept nurse station provides a direct line-of-sight to all patient rooms through full glass ICU sliding doors with integral blinds. Built-in PPE storage and a foldable counter for charting are located in the corridor between each set of patient rooms providing quick access to supplies. The core support rooms were carefully reconfigured to ensure efficient use of space and easy access to supplies. These include staff offices, clean supply/POU, nourishment, equipment storage, dictation/ PACS, and a staff lounge. The existing 13 patient rooms on the 8th floor and 12 patient rooms on the 9th floor were not reconfigured but instead received aesthetic upgrades including new flooring, wall finishes, LED lighting, ceilings, millwork, headwall units, and sliding ICU doors. Both floors received new HVAC units and supply ducts with the 9th floor having HEPA filters for patients who are more immunocompromised and require better protection from airborne contamination.

Overall, the light mix of colors with thoughtfully-placed pops of color has provided a more efficient and staff-friendly environment resulting in a more pleasant healing and working experience for patients, families, and hospital staff.
