The new ownership of OU Health Edmond Medical Center envisioned a new identity for the 40-year-old facility — one that would redirect patients back to the community hospital. The renovation of the third floor as “My Birth Center” was the first phase in bringing obstetrics back to Edmond and was an opportunity to create a new paradigm for a patient-centered healing environment. A focus group consisting of patients, physicians, and staff provided valuable input on user needs in regard to both building function and design.
The obstetrics unit provides eight labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, two c-section suites, a full-term nursery, and family and staff support spaces. The new program includes accommodations for 1,000 deliveries annually and expanded bassinet services for up to 12 newborns. The nature-inspired space features organic elements such as curved walls and rich wall colors. This concept was incorporated holistically throughout the space, even influencing artwork and bed linens. As the first large renovation in the hospital, the art at “My Birth Center” sets the benchmark for future projects at OU Health Edmond Medical Center.
