A major $27.5 million expansion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) within The Children's Hospital at OU Medicine has resulted in a state-of-the-art facility supporting surgical, neurology, and medical ICU services; becoming the most technologically advanced PICU in the state of Oklahoma. MILES was an integral part of the six-year planning and construction process with our team of accredited healthcare designers providing all pre-planning and design services for the expansion of this unit. The team was instrumental in the coordination of the specialized equipment locations; acting as the liaison between the hospital and MEP consultant including a review of the rooms, headwalls, and booms with the clinical teams.

Located on the 6th floor of the hospital, this project added 34 beds and includes treatment for bariatric and burn patients. It includes Airborne Infection Isolation (A.I.I.) rooms with negative pressure and anteroom and two Protective Equipment (P.E.) rooms with positive pressure for immunosuppressed patients.

The design embraces a patient-and-family-centric design principle allowing families an area with in-room amenities such as a sleeping couch, television, and restroom. This area adds to the existing 25 beds bringing the total capacity to 59 for treating the sickest pediatric patients in the region.
